Matthew 1:1-17

Some of the dysfunctional people in Jesus' family tree:

• vs 3: Tamar was involved in an inappropriate relationship with her father-in-law (see Genesis 38)
• vs 5: Rahab was a prostitute (see Joshua 2)
• vs 5: Ruth was a Moabite (see Ruth 1)
• vs 6: Uriah's wife was a Mistress (see 2 Samuel 11)

Q. Why? Did Matthew go out of his way to mention  these messed up people in Jesus' genealogy?

• Matthew included sinners in Jesus genealogy, because they  were part of the Christmas story; in fact they were the point of the Christmas story!!!
• the story of Christmas is a story about God drawing near to those who had drawn away.
