What’s Wrong with this world? part I”  Genesis 3

November 22, 2009

What we’ve learned so far:

week 1: Genesis 1

  • what we believe about the origins of our universe affects the way we think, act, and treat people
  • we live in a God-created, God-centred universe

week 2: Genesis 1:26 – 2:17

  • Humans are unique as God’s “image bearers;” we are incredibly valuable, and possess incredible potential, with our highest purpose being to glorify God.

week 3: Genesis 2:18-27

  • God created humans to work
  • God know our needs and meets them
  • God blessed humans with marriage

Q. What happened? What is wrong with the world we live in?

Genesis 3:1-6

The Devil’s tactics: (on Eve and on us)

    • to twist the truth (vs 1)
    • to exploit vulnerabilities (vs 1)
    • to lie, and cast doubt on the goodness of God (vs 4-5)
    • to tell people that they can “be like God” (vs 5)
    • to tempt (vs 6)

The Consequences of Adam and Eve’s Rebellion:

Genesis 3:7-24

    • shame (vs 7)
    • fear (vs 8)
    • blame and dysfunction in the marital relationship          (vs 12,16)
    • painful childbirth (vs 16)
    • increased difficulty in work and in providing food          (vs 17-19)
    • death (spiritual and physical) (vs 19, 22)
    • separation from God’s presence (23-24)

Theologians call this event THE FALL of Mankind.

Applications for us:

  • Know the reason why our world is so messed up; because of the choices of “fallen beings” (humans & the devil)
  • Recognize the tendency which all “fallen beings” have; to want to “be our own god”
  • Keep our eyes open, and make right choices (even when nobody else is)
  • Hope. Hope?!! Hope comes from God’s provision…
    • the animal skins (vs 21)
    • the “protevangelium” (vs 15)
      • Romans 3:23, Colosians 2:13-15
